Asean Dengue Day: Momentum for Dengue Free in Indonesia!

Asean Dengue Day: Momentum for Dengue Free in Indonesia!

Every year, dengue fever continues to be a serious problem in Indonesia, Moms and Dads. However, currently, we have a crucial momentum to combat this disease. ASEAN Dengue Day, which is commemorated every June 15th, provides us with an opportunity to raise awareness and take concrete steps in the prevention and control of dengue.1 Let's explore how Indonesia can achieve dengue-free status through various effective preventive efforts.

The primary goal of ASEAN Dengue Day is to promote preventive measures, enhance monitoring systems, and strengthen the healthcare system to effectively control and reduce the incidence of dengue in the ASEAN region.

One crucial step in preventing dengue is the implementation of 3M Plus, which stands for (Menguras, Menutup, Mendaur Ulang) Drain, Cover, Recycle, and “Plus” movement avoiding mosquito bites.2 By consistently applying these measures, we can reduce the population of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which serve as the vector for dengue. Here is the detailed explanation of each step in 3M Plus:

Drain: Clean and empty water storage containers regularly. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes can breed in stagnant water places like bathtubs, flower pots, buckets, and more. By draining water storage containers, we can eliminate mosquito breeding grounds and reduce the risk of dengue transmission.

Cover: Seal water storage containers tightly. Ensure there are no gaps or holes in water containers, such as barrels, buckets, or bathtubs, that could become a mosquito breeding ground. By securely covering these containers, mosquitoes cannot access the water to lay eggs and reproduce.

Recycle: Recycle used items that could become mosquito breeding grounds. Objects like plastic bottles, cans, old tires, and other containers that can hold water should be properly managed. Reusing recyclable items or disposing them correctly ensures they do not become mosquito breeding sites.

The "Plus" in this context refers to additional preventive measures, such as:

  1. Maintaining mosquito larvae-eating fish.
  2. Using mosquito repellents.
  3. Installing wire screens on windows and ventilation.
  4. Participating in community clean-up activities.
  5. Inspecting water storage containers.
  6. Placing used clothing in covered containers.
  7. Applying larvicide to difficult-to-drain water containers.
  8. Repairing clogged drains and gutters.
  9. Planting mosquito-repelling plants.

3M Plus and Dengue Vaccination as Innovative Dengue Prevention

In addition to 3M Plus, dengue vaccination is also a crucial step in prevention efforts. Vaccination can boost the immune system against the dengue virus and help protect us from the risk of dengue.3 It is essential to follow the vaccination schedule recommended by medical associations and consult with a doctor for further information.

On the occasion of ASEAN Dengue Day, let’s unite to prevent dengue. Increasing awareness of the importance of implementing 3M Plus, participating in vaccination programs, and practicing healthy lifestyles in general are concrete steps toward a dengue-free Indonesia.

Consulting with a doctor about dengue vaccination is a crucial step in maintaining health and prevention. In this consultation, Moms and Dads can obtain accurate and reliable information about dengue vaccinations and receive advice based on your health conditions. Don't hesitate to contact your doctor and schedule a consultation to protect yourself and prevent the spread of dengue!4 May Moms and Dads, along with your families, always stay healthy!
